Forever His Bride

A few years ago my grandmother passed away. She was survived by her five children and a devoted husband. Hobart was, and still is, deeply in love with Wanda. His affection was obvious to anyone who spent even the smallest amount of time with them.

Recently Hobart was reminiscing and mentioned how he missed his "bride". I was touched and deeply moved by the simple comment. Even after all these years she was still his "bride". I think every man would do well to follow Hobart's example and forever remember their wife as their "bride". To never forget the feeling we had the first time we saw them in their dress walking towards us. To always remember how wonderful it was to just hold her hand as you looked in her eyes and said "I do". And to cherish the perfection of that first kiss.

The other day my "bride" shared with me a song she said reminded her of Hobart and Wanda and I could not agree more...

Looking back he sees it all
It was her first date the night he came to call
Her dad said son have her home on time
And promise me you'll never leave her side

He took her to a show in town and he was ten feet off the ground
As he was walking her home and holding her hand
Oh the way she smiled it stole the breath right out of him
Down that old road with the stars up above
He remembers where he was the night he fell in love
He was walking her home

Ten more years and a waiting room at half past one
So when the doctor said come in and meet your son
His knees went weak
When he saw his wife she was smiling as she said he's got your eyes
And as she slept he held her tight his mind went back to that first night

He walked her through the best days of her life
Sixty years together and he never left her side
A nursing home at eighty-five and the doctor said it could be her last night
And the nurse said Oh should we tell him now
Or should he wait until the morning to find out

But when they checked her room that night he was laying by her side
Oh he was walking her home and holding her hand
Oh the way she smiled when he said this is not the end
And just for a while they were eighteen
And she was still more beautiful to him than anything
He was walking her home
He was walking her home

Looking back he sees it all
It was her first date the night he came to call

My "bride" and I were married 14 years ago on the anniversary of Hobart and Wanda's wedding day. In place of a grooms cake we had an anniversary cake honoring their marriage. Next to the cake was a photo of Hobart and Wanda on their wedding day. His eyes were bright and his smile wide...as they always were when he gazed at his "bride".

Chris, Thanks for the beautiful way you expressed the love Mom and Dad shared over their lifetime together. You are so correct ---- he still loves his "bride" and looks forward to the day he sees her again when they will be with each other forever. The words of the song were so appropriate --- thanks, Kara. Love, Mom/Vicki
